When the tide turns, many professionals drift and chase the next trend. A *lighthouse* does the opposite: it stays solid and lets everything else navigate by it. That's *Authoritative Standing*.

Reacting to every wave leaves you exhausted and, worse, indistinguishable from everyone else with the same instincts. But you have an advantage: AI will never replicate integrity, for the simple reason it will always serve its master first.

I wrote Authoritative Standing for professionals who feel the pressure to "reinvent themselves". Often the stronger move is to shine. Hold position and let everything else navigate by you.

When professionals become senior, they learn that their career is like the tide: the water rises and falls. One day they are in great demand; the next, they find that their skills get automated or commoditized, possibly by AI. For most, the instinct is stress and to move faster. Others throw in the towel and start a “bed and breakfast” in Spain or write “coach” as their new profession.

### Drift is not direction

Reacting to every wave leaves you exhausted and, worse, indistinguishable from everyone else with the same instincts. Now consider a lighthouse. This landmark earns its standing precisely because *it does not move*. Sailors trust it because it is there, at any time and in any weather.
